Beyond the mountain vistas, the trek offers valuable insights into the local people and their culture. You can engage with locals from various ethnic groups and share experiences with them. Likewise, the Annapurna Circuit Trekking Route often passes through a conservation area, allowing for the discovery of numerous species of flora and fauna along the journey.

Fitness requirements for the Annapurna Circuit and Thorang La Pass.

Crossing Thorang La Pass is enchanting, thrilling, and challenging at the same time. You will cross this pass before arriving at Muktinath. The trail is rugged, steep, and challenging at some points before arriving at the pass. Therefore, trekkers should be aware of their physical and mental fitness. Not only physical, but a mental state is also equally important to tackle altitude sickness during the trek. Hence, be physically active, participating in cardio, endurance, and strength exercises before the trek for at least 2-3 months. You will walk 10-12 KM on average daily along the Annapurna Circuit Trek Route. Likewise, for the mental preparation, engage in Yoga and meditation to calm your mind.

Can I do the Annapurna Circuit in 8 days?

Although it is popular among nomads, the Annapurna Circuit Trek can be completed in 10 days. However, you can also do it in 8 days by skipping some sections of the Annapurna Circuit Trek Route. In the 8-Day Annapurna Circuit Trek, you will skip Acclimatization in Manang. Likewise, the Annapurna Circuit Trek 8 Days starts with a direct drive from Kathmandu to Chame to cut off another day. Itinerary

Our Guide from Mountain Eco Trails will pick you up from the hotel and drive to the Bus station that goes to Besisahar. From Kathmandu, it will be a scenic drive to Besisahar, covering approximately 200 kilometers. The journey takes 7 to 8 hours via Prithvi Highway, passing through terraced fields, local bazaars, and riverside settlements. Enjoy your first glimpse of rural Nepal and the foothills of the Himalayas. Besisahar, at 760 meters, is the gateway to the Annapurna Round. It will be your first night of the trek in the mountains. Overnight stay at Besisahar.

  • Max Altitude:760 meters
  • Accommodation:Tea house
  • Time:7-8 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch Dinner

After breakfast, hop on a public jeep and drive through rough mountain roads from Besisahar to Chame, the district headquarters of Manang. This 66-kilometer drive climbs steadily, offering mesmerizing views of waterfalls, lush forests, and the Marsyangdi River gorge. As you ascend to 2,650 meters, you'll begin to feel the change in climate and culture—Tibetan influence becomes more visible. Chame, surrounded by Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal, is a charming village that blends adventure with culture. Overnight stay at Chame.

  • Max Altitude:2650 meters
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Time:5-6 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This is your first day of trekking, so stretch your legs and do some warm-ups. After having breakfast, the trek begins with a gradual ascent through dense pine forests and across suspension bridges. The pathway winds along the Marsyangdi River to reach Upper Pisang at 3,300 meters. Expect a 5–6 hour hike covering 13 kilometers of stunning alpine terrain. The panoramic views of Annapurna II and Pisang Peak will leave you speechless. Opting for Upper Pisang over Lower Pisang offers better acclimatization and more dramatic mountain scenery. Overnight stay at Upper Pisang.

  • Max Altitude:3300 meters
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Time:5-6 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Take your breakfast and get ready for another beautiful day of the trek. Today’s trek is both scenic and challenging. The Mountain Trails begin through the evergreen forests and enter the Valley of Manang. Covering 17 kilometers in 6–7 hours, the trail from Upper Pisang to Manang takes you through traditional Tibetan villages like Ghyaru and Ngawal. This route, though longer and steeper, offers unmatched panoramic views of Annapurna II, III, IV, and Gangapurna. As you arrive in Manang at 3,540 meters, you'll notice a stark contrast in vegetation and climate. Manang is a popular rest stop and cultural hub with bakeries, internet cafés, and an altitude clinic. Overnight stay at Manang.

  • Max Altitude:3540 meters
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Time:6-7 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Before you head further ahead to the higher altitude, we make sure that you acclimate properly. That’s why there is an extra day in Manang to adjust to the high altitude. Rest and acclimatize in Manang to prepare your body for the high-altitude ascent to Thorong La. Use this day to explore side hikes to Gangapurna Lake, the Ice Lake (optional), or visit the Himalayan Rescue Association for altitude information. The acclimatization day is vital to avoid AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). Surrounded by snow-clad peaks, Manang offers both natural and cultural enrichment. Overnight stay at Manang Village.

  • Max Altitude:3540 meter
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Time:5-6 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Enjoy the last breakfast at Manang and head to Yak Kharka. Today’s 10-kilometer trek to Yak Kharka takes 4 to 5 hours. The trail gradually ascends through alpine meadows, yak pastures, and juniper forests. As you climb to 4,050 meters, the air gets thinner and the landscape becomes more arid. You’ll pass through villages like Gunsang and enjoy incredible views of the Chulu peaks. Yak Kharka is a peaceful spot ideal for resting before you push to Thorong Phedi.

  • Max Altitude:4050 meters
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Time:5-6 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Have breakfast around 7 in the morning and start the trek to Thorang Phedi. Continue your gradual ascent to Thorong Phedi at 4,525 meters, the base camp for the Thorong La Pass. The trail spans 8 kilometers and typically takes 4 to 5 hours. Although short, this stretch is crucial for acclimatization. Cross a wooden bridge, watch for blue sheep, and be cautious of altitude. Thorong Phedi, a rugged outpost nestled in the Himalayas, offers basic accommodations and an early dinner to prep for tomorrow’s big climb. Overnight stay at Thorang Phedi.

  • Max Altitude:4525 meters
  • Accommodation:Tea House
  • Time:4-5 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The Thorang La Pass Trek will take around 7-9 hours, depending on weather and stamina. Expect snow, steep climbs, and breathtaking views. Reaching the top of the pass, admire the stunning views of the Annapurna Range, Dhaulagiri Range, the Manaslu Range, and the landscapes around. Cherish your moment for a while and take a picture for your memories. Descend carefully to Muktinath at 3,760 meters, a sacred pilgrimage site revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. Travel Insurance

For safety reasons, we always recommend having travel insurance with our clients. Having travel insurance while traveling to the high mountains gives you peace of mind and financial freedom. Purchase a good comprehensive travel insurance that covers your injuries, medical bills, helicopter evacuation above 5000 meters, damaged goods, trip cancellation, etc. Mountain Eco Trails will need a copy of your insurance before you depart for the Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Eco Tourism

Our Team Strongly believes in responsible tourism to support the local community and nature. We suggest that our clients respect the local people and their lifestyle along the way. Likewise, always ask for permission if you do not know what you are doing or if you would like to do something for the community. Moreover, dispose of your waste in a proper manner. Do not throw plastic substances other than into the dustbin. Also, when you are hiring a guide or porter, you are already supporting the livelihood of the local people. Trekking guides and porters in Nepal are fully dependent on tourism. Hiring one of them means you are supporting them indirectly for their livelihood.

Permit Cards for Annapurna Trek

For the Annapurna Circuit, you will require the Annapurna Conservation Area Project Permit Card and the Trekkers Information Management Permit Card. Each of these permit cards costs USD 30 and USD 20 per person, respectively. Mountain Eco Trails will take care of issuing these permit cards once you provide us with your valid passports and photos.

Trekking Gear: Sleeping Bag, Trekking Poles, Duffel Bag, Trekking Boots, Water Bottle, Backpack, Headlamp, etc.

Clothing: Base Layers, Mid Layers, Quick-Dry T-shirts, Fleece Jacket, Down Jacket, Inner Thermal, Trekking Pants, Hiking Shorts, Woolen Socks, Gloves, and Woolen Hat.

Extra Gear: First Aid Kit, Battery Charger, Toiletries, Sun Protection, Passport, Travel Documents, Camera, Nepalese Cash, Raincoat, Reusable Water Bottle, etc.

How difficult is it to cross the Thorung La Pass? What is the trail condition?

Overall, the Annapurna Circuit Trek is not as difficult as it seems. It is considered a moderate trek in terms of difficulty. This journey involves rugged terrain, high passes, and rocky trails. Thus, hiking through the rugged trail at high altitudes like Thorung La Pass can be challenging. The trail condition up to Manang is manageable. After Manang, be prepared for a steep climb until you cross the Thorung La Pass. The trek from Manang to Yak Kharka and from Yak Kharka to Thorung La Pass via Thorung Phedi is the trickiest part due to the high elevation and rugged pathways.

Trek Annapurna in Spring and Autumn

Choosing the right time for the 10-Day Annapurna Circuit Trek is crucial for a safe and enjoyable journey in the Himalayas. Spring and autumn are the two best seasons to trek in Nepal, including the Annapurna Circuit. In spring, the weather is moderate with longer days and clear skies. Likewise, the forests are filled with blooming rhododendron flowers. Another popular trekking season in Nepal is autumn. The monsoon rain clears the haze and dust, improving the atmosphere and visibility. Additionally, it offers a great opportunity to participate in major festivals in Nepal during autumn.

Meals during the 10-day Annapurna Circuit

Meal items along the Annapurna Circuit Trek Route vary widely. The teahouses offer menus set by the local community. You will receive three meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. You can choose one main course from the menu at each meal. Some of the food items available in the teahouses of the Annapurna Circuit include the following:

Breakfast: Tibetan bread, chapati, oatmeal, French toast, corn flakes, hash browns, egg dishes, potato dishes, muesli, pancakes, etc.

Lunch and Dinner: Nepali dal bhat thukpa, momos, Tibetan bread, macaroni, spaghetti, Sherpa stew, sandwiches, pizza, burgers, plain rice, vegetable curry, spring rolls, etc.

Similarly, drinking water along the Annapurna Trek is available in the teahouses. However, we recommend using boiled or filtered water to minimize plastic bottle use.

Accommodation Facilities along the Annapurna Trek Route

You will sleep in basic teahouses throughout the Annapurna Trek. The rooms are typically arranged in a twin-bed sharing format. If you are with a group, you will share a room. However, during the peak season, you might need to share a room with other trekkers. We will do our best to provide you with private rooms whenever possible along the trek. Additionally, the teahouses offer internet access and hot shower facilities when available, though you will need to pay extra for these services. It’s also advisable to carry a well-rated sleeping bag. Although teahouses provide warm blankets, it can get extremely cold at high altitudes like Yak Khara and Thorong Phedi.
