Lo Manthang

This city always hosts the largest and most famous Tiji Festival in May.

Tiji Festival

The Upper Mustang Trek in May allows the trekkers to experience the unique Tiji Festival in Lho Manthang. According to the myth, this festival is celebrated by the people marking the victory over the devil. The local people celebrate it by dancing and reciting mantras. Himalayas and Old Caves

The trek to Upper Mustang delivers excellent mountain views in both the North and South parts. However, most of the mountains are on the northern side. Nilgiri Himal, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and other ranges can be seen during this trek.

A typical Upper Mustang trek itinerary takes around 12 to 14 days, starting with a scenic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, the gateway to Mustang. From here, trekkers follow the Kali Gandaki River valley, passing through barren ridges, Tibetan-style villages, and Buddhist shrines. However, if you do the Upper Mustang Trek from Kathmandu, it can take an extra 2 days.

The highlight of this Mustang trek in Nepal is reaching Lo Manthang, the walled city and ancient capital of Mustang. The cultural significance, monasteries, and royal palace here make this journey stand apart from other Himalayan treks. On your return, you’ll retrace the trails via charming settlements like Ghami and Samar, completing a circuit back to Jomsom.

Upper Mustang Trek Cost and Permits 2025, 2026

Being a restricted area trek, the Upper Mustang trek cost is higher compared to other trekking regions in Nepal. Foreign trekkers are required to obtain a Restricted Area Permit (RAP), which costs USD 500 for the first 10 days and USD 50 for each additional day. You’ll also need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), costing around USD 30.

For 2025, the average cost of a guided Upper Mustang tour package ranges between USD 1,900–2,500, depending on the services included. Itinerary

The bus to Pokhara leaves around 7 am. Hence, after a quick breakfast, you will depart for Pokhara in a Tourist Bus. The highway gives you some glimpses of mountains in the far distance. Likewise, you can witness the fast-flowing Trishuli Rivers and Rafters showing their skills. Driving for 7-10 hours, you will arrive at Pokhara. Check in at your hotel and do some rest after long hours of driving.

You will set off early to catch the flight to Jomsom from Pokhara. The views from the plane are amazing, especially Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Ranges. Landing at Jomsom, the proper trek begins towards Kagbeni. You will have enough time in the afternoon to discover around Kagbeni. Overnight stay at Kagbeni.

After having breakfast at Kagbeni, the trail begins along the Kali Gandaki River. You must be careful as the wind can hit up making the walk a little challenging. As the trek goes along, witness the traditional houses at Tangbe. Next, follow a ridge to reach the Chele Village to stay overnight.

Today you will cross two passes which can make the trek a little challenging. One is Taklam La Pass (3624m) and the other is Darjori La Pass (3735m). However, these passes deliver stunning mountain views. The trail starts to descend to Samar Village and continues along a ride. Another descent takes you to Syangboche village for an overnight stay.

Another exciting day and other passes to cross again. Crossing Yamada La Pass (3850m) takes you to wonderful villages with farmlands to see. Trek continues through the forest to arrive at Nyi Pass (4010m), from here the trail moves down to Ghami. You will spend overnight.

After breakfast, the trek begins through the rough and slippery trail. Descending a suspension bridge over Ghami Khola, the trek continues towards Tsharang. Along the trek, get to see the mani walls with some Tibetan Mantras on them. Upon reaching Tsharang, you can see the fortress and red gompa to the east of this village. Today’s short trek allows you to explore around Tsharang till evening.

From Tsharang, you will drop down into a canyon and cross a river to ascend to Lho La Pass (3950m). The pass gives you the first glimpse of Lho Manthang. Likewise, the mountains like Tilicho, Annapurna, and Nilgiri are more visible today.  Overnight stay at Lho Manthang.

Explore the Lho Manthang and the mystery of the Upper Mustang today. The day begins with a visit to Chooser Cave. You will get to know about sky caves and Jhong caves as well. Likewise, if time allows, visit different Gompas and villages around Lho Manthang. Strolling around the Lho gives you enough information about Upper Mustang. Get along with the local people, try local dishes, and enjoy the rest of the day. Overnight stay at Lho Manthang.

You will walk a little longer today than usual. However, the trek has a lot to see along the way. Pass through the Gyakar Village which is the home of 1200-year-old Ghar Gompa. The Rock painting of this Gompa is amazing. You will continue your walk through the local village to reach Drakmar.

The trek starts early in the morning to avoid the strong winds along the way. Normally, as the day progresses, the walk becomes more difficult because of the strong wind. Walking down through a dry plateau and local farmlands, you will reach Ghiling. Moreover, there are impressive views of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri on the sight. Overnight stay at Ghiling.

Leaving Ghiling, the trek passes through the remote landscapes with stunning views of the surroundings. You will cross the Kali Gandaki River through a rock tunnel as the trek continues. Overnight stay at Chhusang.

Saying goodbye to Upper Mustang, you will arrive at Jomsom where the trek started. The last trekking day gives you some of the panoramic views of mountains along the way. You will continue to walk until Jomsom arrives where you will spend overnight.

Flights to Jomsom for the Upper Mustang Trek

The adventure begins with a breathtaking flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, a small airstrip nestled between towering mountains. This 20-minute flight offers spectacular aerial views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. From Jomsom, the trek officially begins as you ascend towards Kagbeni, the entry point to Upper Mustang.

We handle all your flight arrangements, ensuring smooth logistics so you can focus on enjoying your trek rather than dealing with last-minute hassles.

Moderate-Level Upper Mustang Trek for Beginners

While the Upper Mustang lies at an altitude of 3,800 meters, the trek is considered moderate in difficulty. Daily walks average 5–7 hours, with gradual ascents and descents rather than steep climbs. This makes the Upper Mustang trek suitable for beginners with a reasonable level of fitness. Our itineraries are carefully designed to allow for acclimatization, and our guides ensure that trekkers of all levels can enjoy the journey without unnecessary strain.

Accommodation throughout the Journey to Upper Mustang Trek, Nepal

The 14-day Upper Mustang Trek Nepal includes 2 nights ' accommodation in Pokhara and 10 nights in the mountains. You will stay in the best available tea houses on a sharing basis during the trek. The hotels along the trek are very simple and basic. They do provide a hot shower and Internet access at an extra cost.

Note: Accommodation in Kathmandu is not included in the Package. But we can recommend that you tell us about your budget and interests.

Meals during the Trek to Mustang 

Since the trek is at a high altitude, you need plenty of healthy meals to fuel your body. This trekking package includes 12 Breakfasts, 11 lunches, and 11 Dinners. You can choose the meals you prefer from the Menu they have set.

Breakfast Meals: Oatmeal, Corn Flakes, French Toast, Butter, Cheese, Tibetan Bread, Chapati, Porridge, Eggs, Pancake, Muesli, Breads, and Hot Drinks (Tea or Coffee).

Lunch: Tibetan Bread, Soups, Steaks, Sandwiches, Momo, Macaroni, Spaghetti, Pasta, Vegetable Curry, Pizza, and Desserts.

Dinner: The meal items for dinner are almost the same as Lunch. You can choose Daal Bhat, Vegetable curry, Soup items, Noodles, Potatoes, Salad, etc.

Note: We do not recommend taking non-veg items during the trek. The quality of meat is not as good as in Pokhara or Kathmandu. Also, meals in Kathmandu and Pokhara are not included in this package.

Best Time to Trek Upper Mustang for the Tiji Festival

The Tiji Festival is the cultural crown jewel of the Upper Mustang trek. Celebrated in Lo Manthang during May (spring season), this three-day festival depicts the victory of good over evil through colorful masked dances, rituals, and traditional music.

Spring and autumn are the most popular times for trekking in Upper Mustang. However, if you want to witness the Tiji Festival, planning your trek in May 2025 will provide an unmatched cultural experience. Upper Mustang Trek – Spring vs. Autumn Weather

The Upper Mustang trek can be undertaken in both spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November).

Spring (March–May): Perfect for blooming landscapes and the Tiji Festival, though windy afternoons are common.

Autumn (September–November): Clear skies and stable weather conditions, offering excellent visibility of Mustang’s rugged landscapes.

Both seasons provide unique experiences, but spring is ideal if you want to combine trekking with cultural festivities.

Monsoon Season (June-August)

Unlike other trekking routes in Nepal like the Annapurna Circuit Trek, the monsoon is the perfect time to do the Upper Mustang Trek. Since the region is the rain shadow part of Nepal, you can do this trek in the rainy season as well. However, you may experience rain in Pokhara and the Lower part of the Mustang Region.

  • Since the trek is near to Tibetan Border, foreigners need a special restricted permit card. Apart from that, you need an ACAP and TIMs Permit card too.

  • Yes, you can get hot shower service in different tea houses along the trek. However, it may incur a certain amount for using the hot shower.

  • There are ATMs only in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Jomsom. However, we suggest you carry enough Nepalese currency from Pokhara. You need cash for several purposes and services.

  • Yes, of course, you can do the Upper Mustang Trek by Jeep. If you do not want to trek then driving to Lho Manthang is an ideal option.
