This journey takes you to the foot of Mardi Himal (5,587m), offering stunning views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Peak), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. Unlike its popular neighbors like the Annapurna Base Camp or Poon Hill Trek, Mardi Himal remains tranquil, raw, and magical. Nowadays, the Mardi Himal Trek is one of the hottest destinations for both beginners and seasoned trekkers worldwide.

Though there are other trekking routes in Nepal to experience the adventure in the Himalayas. Among them, the Mardi Himal Trek Route is the best for experiencing pristine nature. The trail passes along the rhododendron forests, winding through the landscapes and small villages. Get to know about the lifestyle of the people living in the villages like Pittam Deurali Forest Camp, Low Camp, and High Camp. Mardi Himal Trek is beyond the natural beauty and the high Himalayas. It provides an opportunity to explore the flora and fauna along with the local insights.

Why is Mardi Himal Trekking Nepal’s Best Hidden Gem?

  • Fewer Crowds: While ABC Trek and EBC Trek are popular among travelers, Mardi Himal remains less crowded.
  • Excellent Mardi Himal View Point: Just below the Mardi Himal Base Camp, there is an Upper View Point that offers sparkling views of the mountains.
  • Nearest Trekking Route from Pokhara: The trek is accessible from Pokhara, which is the closest destination achievable in 4-5 days.
  • Untouched Trail with Wild Terrain: Hike through the untouched dense forests, ridges, Yak Pasture, and steep terrain.

How Difficult is the Mardi Himal Trek for First-Time Trekkers?

Mardi Himal is classified as a moderate difficulty level, making it ideal for those with reasonable fitness. The trek includes some steep and narrow ridges above High Camp, requiring good physical fitness to navigate these ridges at high altitude. The stretch from High Camp to Mardi Himal Base Camp is fairly challenging due to its terrain and steep ascent. Though trekkers don’t require technical gear like ropes and an ice axe, you must have to be fit and know how to use trekking poles in a difficult portion of the Mountain Trails. Moreover, the route to Mardi Himal Base Camp can be slippery when it rains or snows, which makes it even more challenging. Overall, the route is not that difficult if you choose the best time to do the Mardi Himal Trek, which is the Spring and Autumn seasons.

Kathmandu, known as the cultural heart of Nepal, is a bustling city filled with ancient temples, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and colorful markets.

After a long flight, today is meant for rest and initial orientation. You’ll meet your trekking guide for a briefing about the upcoming Mardi Himal Trek itinerary, review your gear checklist, and go over any last-minute preparations. If time permits, take a walk around the lively streets of Thamel—a popular tourist district with trekking shops, local eateries, and cultural attractions.

Kathmandu’s warm hospitality, rich culture, and spiritual atmosphere set the tone for your Himalayan adventure. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning trekker, the city always offers something new to explore.

    • Max Altitude:1400 meter
    • Accommodation:3-Star Hotel

Today, we leave the Kathmandu Valley and begin the scenic drive to Pokhara, Nepal’s lakeside paradise. Early morning, our guide will come to pick you up at your hotel around 6:30, as the tourist bus to Pokhara leaves at 7 in the morning. The drive takes around 7 to 8 hours by tourist bus or private vehicle, covering roughly 200 kilometers of winding roads along riverbanks and lush hills. This overland journey offers your first glimpse of rural Nepal—terraced fields, traditional villages, and panoramic views of the Himalayas. Pokhara, nestled beside Phewa Lake, is a peaceful town known for its natural beauty and laid-back atmosphere. It also serves as the gateway to the Annapurna and Mardi Himal Trekking routes.

Once in Pokhara, you can check in at your hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening stroll along the lakeside promenade. Boating on Phewa Lake, sipping coffee with a view of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain), or visiting the World Peace Pagoda are great options if time allows.

    • Max Altitude:850 meters
    • Accommodation:3- Star Hotel
    • Time:7-8 hours
    • Meals:Breakfast

After breakfast in Pokhara, we take a short 1-hour drive to Kande, the official starting point of the Mardi Himal Trek. From here, your actual trekking adventure begins. The trail ascends gradually through rhododendron forests and terraced farmlands, offering occasional views of the Annapurna range.

You'll pass through the charming village of Australian Camp (2060m), a popular lunch stop with jaw-dropping mountain vistas. From here, the trail continues to Pothana and then on to Deurali (2150m), our destination for the night.

Deurali is a beautiful ridge-top village with sweeping views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, and Machhapuchhre. The air is crisp, the forests dense, and the environment tranquil—a perfect introduction to trekking in the Himalayas.

    • Max Altitude:2150 meters
    • Accommodation:Tea House
    • Time:4-5 hours
    • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today, you leave behind human settlements and enter deep into the mystical rhododendron forests. The trail steadily climbs through the lush woodland, offering a magical trek experience that feels almost untouched.

As you gain altitude and approach Forest Camp (2,600m), you'll notice a change in vegetation and temperature. After a short rest, the trail ascends further to Low Camp at 3,000m. From here, the views of Machhapuchhre become more prominent, dramatically jutting into the sky like a shark’s fin.

Low Camp is a small collection of teahouses surrounded by wilderness. The sky is often clear in the early morning and late evening, making it a great spot for stargazing and mountain photography.

    • Max Altitude:3000 meters
    • Accommodation:Tea House
    • Time:6-7 Hours
    • Meals:Breakfast,Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, the trail climbs above the tree line, transitioning into a ridge-line walk with panoramic views on both sides. You’ll trek across grassy slopes, grazing areas, and yak pastures. With every step, the Himalayas draw closer—Machhapuchhre to the east, Annapurna South to the west, and Mardi Himal directly in front.

The trail to High Camp is steep but rewarding. After 4 to 5 hours of uphill trekking, you reach High Camp at 3,500 meters. The lodges here are basic but cozy, perched on the edge of an open ridge offering 270-degree views of snow-capped peaks.

High Camp is the staging point for the next day’s highlight: the hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp.

    • Max Altitude:3500 meters
    • Accommodation:Tea House
    • Time:3-4 hours
    • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This is the most rewarding and strenuous day of the Mardi Himal itinerary. Starting early—usually before sunrise—you ascend toward Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m), the highest point of the trek. The trail is steep, narrow, and rocky, but free of snow in most trekking seasons.

As the sun rises, the Himalayas come alive. You'll witness dramatic views of Annapurna I, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, and Machhapuchhre—all glowing in golden light. The sense of solitude and raw nature here is unmatched, making it a photographer’s dream and a spiritual experience.

After soaking in the views, you descend to High Camp for brunch and continue further downhill to Bandal Danda (3200m), a peaceful camping area nestled in the woods.

    • Max Altitude:4500 meters
    • Accommodation:Tea house
    • Time:7-8 Hours
    • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today’s trail descends sharply through dense forests and terraced farmland until you reach the quiet Gurung village of Siddhing. This alternate descent route is less crowded, offering a chance to explore off-the-beaten-path villages.

Upon arrival in Siddhing, you’ll board a private jeep or local vehicle that takes you back to Pokhara, bringing your Mardi Himal trekking adventure full circle. The drive is bumpy but scenic, following mountain streams and hillside farms.

After checking into your hotel in Pokhara, enjoy the comforts of city life: hot showers, delicious meals, and perhaps a massage or lakeside coffee as you reflect on your journey.

    • Max Altitude:850 meters
    • Accommodation:3- Star Hotel
    • Time:6-7 hours
    • Meals:Breakfast

Today, you return to Kathmandu via tourist bus, retracing the scenic route from the Annapurna region. The 7–8-hour journey gives you one last look at Nepal’s diverse terrain—from river valleys to terraced hillsides and bustling towns.

Once in Kathmandu, you’ll be transferred to your hotel. You may spend your final evening shopping for souvenirs, exploring more heritage sites, or enjoying a farewell Nepali dinner with your group.

This marks the conclusion of your incredible Mardi Himal Trek—an adventure that blends culture, nature, and panoramic mountain experiences.

    • Max Altitude:1350 Meters
    • Accommodation:3- Star Hotel

      Good to Know

      Travel Insurance

The risk of altitude sickness during the Mardi Himal Trekking is very minimal. However, you may encounter an unexpected incident like natural disasters, altitude sickness, injuries, or even have to evacuate by Helicopter. Hence, a quality travel insurance that covers an altitude of 5000 meters and above should be purchased. Your insurance must cover the high-altitude accidents and other medical bills to give you financial freedom when you are in trouble. Also, after you book the trek with us, we will need a copy of your insurance, which helps us to quickly contact your insurance if you are in difficulties.

When to visit Mardi Himal Base Camp?

If you are planning this trek, the ideal time to visit Mardi Himal Base Camp is right after the monsoon, specifically during the post-monsoon season in Nepal. Once the monsoon season clears the sky and atmosphere, the views of the mountains, hills, and landscapes become clear. You could say that the Autumn Season (September-November) is the best time to undertake the Mardi Trek.

Another favorable time for the Mardi Himal Trek is the pre-monsoon period, i.e., March-May, which is also known as Spring. During this time, the forests are adorned with beautiful rhododendrons, and the sky is crystal clear, offering stunning mountain views. Moreover, the weather and temperature are average, neither too hot nor too cold. Other than that, trekking in Nepal during the monsoon delivers challenges like weather changes, rainfall, slippery trails, etc. Whereas, in winter, the extreme cold with snowfall can cause difficulties.

Permit Card for the Mardi Trek

When you book the Mardi Himal Trekking with Mountain Eco Trails, the permit fees are included in the package. Plus, we handle the issuing of the permit cards, which makes your trip even smoother and hassle-free. For this journey to Mardi, you will require the Annapurna Conservation Area Project Permit card. To obtain this permit, we need your passport copy and photo along with the insurance copy. The trekking guide will keep this permit during the trek, and after it he will provide it you.

Trekking Trail Condition of the Mardi Trek Route

The trekking trail of Mardi Himal is quite easy in the lower section until Bandal Danda. After you start the trek at Kande, the Mountain Trail goes through the small settlements with a gentle uphill climb up to Australian Base Camp. From here, you will often hike through the rhododendron forests and teahouse stops. The route is easy with occasional ups and downs through the forests. However, after reaching Bandal Danda, the vegetation changes, and the trail starts to get narrow through the ridge line. Above Bandal Danda, the trekking trail is steep with rocky ridges. Likewise, the Mountain Trail from High Camp to Mardi Himal Base Camp is another set of challenges. It needs careful guidance. Often, the route goes through a narrow and steep rocky path. Use your trekking poles properly to stand on your feet without any trouble.

Likewise, teahouses are the places where you stop overnight, have breakfast and dinner, and socialize with other trekkers.

In this 9-day Mardi Himal Trek, the meals are included in the packages during the trek apart frm Kathmandu and Pokhara. Altitude sickness in Mardi Himal Base Camp

Altitude Sickness in the Mardi Himal Trek can be a possibility, especially above the High camp while hiking to the Mardi Himal Base Camp. From the High Camp (3500 meters), you will gain almost 1000 meters of elevation to reach at Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4500 meters. It can be a risk of sickness during the Hike. You may experience symptoms like headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, lack of breath, and even nasal bleeding. You must inform your guide as soon as you feel these kinds of Symptoms. Our Trekking Guide from Mountain Eco Trails is a first-aid trained guide who will immediately take action after it.

Before it gets worse, stop climbing to high altitudes after you experience the symptoms. If the condition is bad, better to descend to a lower elevation. Also, drink as much water as you can to make yourself hydrated. Taking ginger and garlic soups is a healthy option to control the sickness. If possible and available along the route in the teahouses, better take healthy soups to avoid sickness.
