Overview of Mardi Trek from Pokhara

The Mardi Himal Trek from Pokhara is one of the best short treks in Nepal, capable of being completed within four days. This alternative trek in the Annapurna Region is gaining popularity among beginners, following the Poon Hill Trek. The natural diversity and close-up views of the mountain peaks make this trek quite an exhilarating outdoor adventure.

Though you can also do the Mardi Himal Trek from Kathmandu with a customized Itinerary, this 4-day Mardi Himal Trek from Pokhara is the shortest version of the trip. Trekkers who are already in Pokhara or want to do the trek directly from Pokhara on a low budget can choose this 4-day Mardi Himal Trek Itinerary. The venture leads you to the highest point at Mardi Himal Base Camp, 4500 meters above sea level.

With a somewhat challenging trail due to the limited number of days, this 4-day trek from Pokhara requires good physical condition to cope with the route and altitude. Though this trek is suitable for all age groups, it can be challenging for those who don’t have past trekking experience at high altitudes.

Best Short Trek from Pokhara for Beginners

Previously, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek was the center of attraction for many trekkers who were beginners. Even now they prefer the 4-day Poon Hill Trek. But nowadays, with this newly founded trekking route in Annapurna, the Mardi Himal Trek has gained a lot of attention as the best short trek from Pokhara. This is because of its serene natural beauty, along with breathtaking mountain views from a closer distance.

4-Day Mardi Himal Trek difficulty

This trek in the Annapurna Region is considered to be an easy-to-moderate trip. However, reaching the height of Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4500 meters is no small feat. The route from the High Camp to Upper View Point is somewhat difficult due to the narrow ridge. Aside from that, the Mardi Himal Trek Route is easy, following a gentle trail with several ups and downs. Novice trekkers at the top of Upper View Point may experience symptoms of altitude sickness if they are not well-prepared or lack adequate acclimatization.

Possibility of completing Mardi Trek in 3 days

The 3-day Mardi Himal Trek is a quick way to explore the Himalayas in the Annapurna Region. It can be completed in 3 days and is suitable for those in excellent physical condition. Nomads without trekking experience are not recommended for this trek. Additionally, the difficulty level is high, reaching 4500 meters within 2 days of Pokhara. Trekkers will need to cover more distance in a day compared to the regular Mardi Himal Trekking itinerary. The 3-day Mardi Trek itinerary begins with a drive from Pokhara to Kande, followed by a trek to Forest Camp. The next day, the journey continues to High Camp. On the third day, hikers ascend to Mardi Himal Base Camp before trekking down to Siddhing and taking a jeep back to Pokhara.

How to go to the Mardi Himal Trek from Pokhara?

The Mardi Himal Trek Route Map is easy to understand, as the major trailhead of this trip is Kande. From Pokhara, a 45-minute drive will take you to Kande to start the trek to Forest Camp. The next day, you will hike through the rhododendron forests, reaching High Camp via Low Camp and Banda Danda. This is the last stop before hiking to Mardi Himal Base Camp. On the following day, there is an early morning hike to Base Camp, followed by the trek down to Low Camp for the last overnight stay on this trek. The fourth day involves descending through the jungle to Siddhing and then driving back to Pokhara in a jeep.

Accommodation, Electricity, and Internet Service along the Mardi Trail

Accommodation along the Mardi Trail is well established with basic facilities. Although the amenities are not as luxurious as in Pokhara, teahouses are the best place to rest and spend an overnight. They provide a room with twin beds, comfortable mattresses, pillows, and warm blankets. You have to carry a quality sleeping bag with you to avoid severe colds at night. Similarly, some of the accommodations in the lower Mardi have attached bathrooms, but in the upper region, trekkers should share the bathroom and Toilet.

The other basic services the teahouses will provide you with will be internet service and the electricity charging service at an extra cost. Though the internet is not as reliable as in the city, it can be helpful to send emails or messages to your family members. Same with the charging facilities as well, which are limited. You can charge your mobile devices for a limited time as the teahouses use solar panels for electricity. Each of these services will cost USD2- 5 per person.

Altitude Sickness and its remedies during the Mardi Himal Trek

This is a 4-day trek that takes you up to an elevation of 4500 meters above the base camp. Hence, trekkers may feel altitude sickness due to the high altitude and covering more distance in fewer days. The common symptoms of the sickness are: dizziness, vomiting, lack of sleep, fatigue, lack of vision, lack of appetite, etc. You should get rid of these symptoms for a successful trek. Here are the remedies to avoid altitude sickness during the Mardi Trek:

  • Drink enough water to stay hydrated; 4-5 liters of water is recommended.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages and smoking during the trek.
  • Walk slowly at a similar pace.
  • Eat a vegetarian and nutritious meal that provides enough carbs, protein, and fiber.
  • Choose the best time for the Mardi Trek, i.e., Spring and Autumn seasons.
  • Do not push yourself if you start to feel the symptoms. Rather descend to a lower elevation.
