Itinerary

Your Kyanjin Gompa Trek begins early morning in Kathmandu with a scenic drive to Syabrubesi. We depart by tourist bus around 7:00 AM. The road heads north out of the Kathmandu Valley, winding along hillsides and following the Trishuli River.

Syabrubesi is a small town at the confluence of two rivers (Bhote Koshi and Langtang Khola) and is the main starting point for treks into Langtang and Tamang Heritage trails. Overnight stay at Syabrubeshi

  • Max Altitude:1500 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:6-7 Hours
  • Meals:Lunch & Dinner

The first day of the Kyanjin Gompa trek! After an early breakfast, you will leave Syabrubesi, crossing a suspension bridge over the Bhote Koshi River, followed by another over the Langtang Khola. The trail follows the Langtang River upstream most of the day.

You will hike through lush subtropical forests of oak, maple, and rhododendron, gradually gaining altitude. There are some steep ascents with stone steps in places – take it slow and steady.

By mid- to late afternoon, we arrive at Lama Hotel (2,400 m), a small settlement of a few lodges nestled in the woods. Overnight stay at Lama Hotel.

  • Max Altitude:2400 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:5-6 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We begin the day with a hearty breakfast and then start trekking north along the Langtang Khola. Today’s trail takes us above the tree line into the alpine valley. At first, you will continue through forested terrain – tall oaks and rhododendrons. After about 2 hours, you’ll notice the landscape changing: forests give way to scrub and meadows.

Moving on, we pass wandering yaks and pack horses grazing. The trail gently climbs and the remnants of old Langtang Village begin to appear. Langtang Village is a culturally rich Tamang village with traditional stone houses. Overnight stay at Langtang Village.

  • Max Altitude:3430 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:5-6 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is a shorter trek, allowing us to acclimate to the higher altitude. After breakfast with a view (likely with a dazzling sunrise on the mountains), we depart Langtang and continue up the valley.

The trail is a gentle incline through high yak pastures and open valley terrain. Without thick forests obstructing views, you’ll have spectacular 360° vistas during the walk.

After only about 3 hours of trekking, the trail ascends a small ridge, and the Kyanjin Gompa area comes into sight. Kyanjin Gompa (3,800 m) is a picturesque village and the last permanent settlement on this trek. Overnight stay at Kyanjin Gompa.

  • Max Altitude:3800 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:3-4 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Enjoy the beautiful sunrise view over the mountains from Kyanjin Gompa. Today you will begin your return trek, retracing our steps down the valley. It’s much easier going downhill. We pass back through Langtang Village, where we might stop for a cup of tea or to say goodbye to any locals we met.

Continuing down, we have lunch en route, possibly at Ghodatabela or further down at a place like Bamboo, depending on timing. The scenery, which we saw coming up, now offers a different perspective but remains beautiful. As we lose elevation, you’ll feel the air thicken, and breathing becomes easier.

By late afternoon, we arrive all the way back to Lama Hotel (2,400 m), the same lodge area we stayed in on Day 2. Overnight stay at Lama Hotel.

  • Max Altitude:2400 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:7-8 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast at Lama Hotel, we embark on the final day of trekking. The trail today is all the way downhill back to Syabrubesi, along the same route we came up. You will notice how much faster the descent feels compared to the ascent. We hike through the lush forests once again, saying farewell to the monkeys and birds. The scenery gradually transitions from alpine to subtropical as the air warms up and the greenery intensifies.

Overnight stay at Syabrubeshi

  • Max Altitude:1500 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:4-5 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast in Syabrubesi, we board our vehicle for the journey back to Kathmandu. Typically, we catch the morning public bus around 7:00 or 8:00 AM. If you’ve booked a private jeep, we’ll depart at your convenient time in the morning. The drive is again about 6-7 hours (depending on road conditions and traffic as we near Kathmandu).

Upon reaching Kathmandu in the late afternoon, our transport will take you to your hotel. In the evening, we invite you to a farewell dinner (included in our package) at a traditional Nepali restaurant, where you can celebrate your trek completion with your guide and team, and enjoy Nepali cuisine with cultural music/dance.

Best Time to Visit Kyanjin Gompa

The best time to trek to Kyanjin Gompa is during Nepal’s two main trekking seasons: spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). These periods offer the most favourable weather and clear mountain views. Here’s an overview of what to expect in each season:

Spring (Mar, Apr, May): One of the ideal times for the Kyanjin Gompa trek.

  • The weather is mild and stable.
  • Rhododendron forests along the trail bloom in vibrant colours during April, adding beauty to the trek.
  • Visibility is generally good, revealing crystal-clear views of Langtang’s snowy peaks.

Autumn (Sep, Oct, Nov): The autumn months are the peak trekking season in Nepal.

  • Autumn offers stunning visibility.
  • Days are pleasantly warm (10–15°C at Kyanjin in Oct) and nights are chilly.
  • This season offers consistently clear skies, making it perfect for mountain vistas and photography.
  • The cultural festivals of Dashain and Tihar also fall in this period, which can be an enriching experience if you’re in Nepal.

Late September through November, and March through early May, are the gold-standard periods for the Kyanjin Gompa Trek. During these times, you get a great balance of good weather, clear views, and manageable trail conditions. We strongly recommend planning your trek in these seasons for the best experience.

However, if your schedule only allows off-season, Mountain Eco Trails can still arrange a trek with appropriate precautions. Each season has its own charm – be it wildflowers in spring or tranquil snowscapes in winter – so with the right preparation, you can enjoy the Langtang trek almost year-round.

Places to Stay During the Kyanjin Gompa Trek

Accommodation on the Kyanjin Gompa trek is in local teahouses run by friendly families in each village. These provide basic but comfortable lodging and home-cooked meals.

Rooms in teahouses are generally twin-share with beds, a mattress, a pillow, and a blanket. It’s advisable to bring a sleeping bag for extra warmth.

Toilets are mostly shared squat toilets. Hot showers (bucket or gas-heated) are available at some places for an extra fee (around $2–$5). Dining rooms are communal, often heated by a stove in the evening, where trekkers gather.

Every teahouse provides meals (from the menu) and drinking water (usually boiled or filtered, for a small cost). The teahouses on the Kyanjin Gompa trek are welcoming and provide a great way to meet fellow trekkers and locals each evening.

Mountain Eco Trails will handle all the teahouse reservations in advance, especially in peak season, to ensure you have a spot to sleep and relax each night.

Food Items During the Kyanjin Gompa Trek

You will be pleasantly surprised by the variety of food items available on the Kyanjin Gompa trek. Teahouse menus are quite extensive given the remote location, though choices become simpler at higher elevations. Here’s what you can generally expect for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the trek:

Breakfast Options: Common choices include porridge with honey, pancakes, Tibetan bread with jam or eggs, and various styles of eggs, toast with peanut butter, chapati with honey, or hash browns in some lodges. All breakfasts come with a choice of tea or coffee.

Lunch & Dinner: The lunch and dinner include Daal Bhat, noodle dishes like fried noodles (chow mein), Thukpa, fried rice, mo:mo, spring rolls, pastas (spaghetti, macaroni) or french fries, western items such as pizza, burger (simple version), or soup (garlic soup is popular for altitude).

Eating well is crucial for energy on the trek, and the teahouses will take good care of you with freshly cooked, hearty meals.

Tip: Embrace the local foods – Dal Bhat is not only tasty but also gives you a true Nepali experience. Trying a bowl of Sherpa stew or Tibetan bread with yak cheese can add to the cultural adventure of your trek!
