Things to see during the 14-Day Upper Mustang Trek, Nepal

Lo Manthang

The city of Lho Manthang, a walled city, is the capital of the Upper Mustang Region. Lho Manthang-which surrounds it, means wall in the Tibetan Language. The visitors can feel the power of spirituality after entering this city. It is because of the monasteries, old houses, and the way this city is built. Interestingly, this city has a King to date. This city always hosts the largest and most famous Tiji Festival in May.

Tiji Festival

The Upper Mustang Trek in May allows the trekkers to experience the unique Tiji Festival in Lho Manthang. According to the myth, this festival is celebrated by the people marking the victory over the devil. The local people celebrate it by dancing and reciting mantras. It is an excellent opportunity to learn and cherish the culture and traditions of the local people.

Himalayas and Old Caves

The trek to Upper Mustang delivers excellent mountain views in both the North and South parts. However, most of the mountains are on the northern side. Nilgiri Himal, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and other ranges can be seen during this trek.

Apart from the mountains, the Old Hill caves are the cultural display of this region. There are many habitable caves in the Mustang. People believe that the cave was made for shelter during the war. Similarly, holy gurus and Rinpoche use the caves as meditation places.

Why is the Upper Mustang Trek 14 Days Special?

Upper Mustang boasts a unique Tibetan-influenced culture and striking desert scenery. The region was a secluded kingdom until the 1990s, and Lo Manthang – the walled capital city. It still preserves centuries-old monasteries, palaces, and a way of life untouched by modernity.

Trekkers traverse a desert plateau with dramatic red and ochre cliffs, where “sky caves” and colourful chortens line the trails. These mysterious caves are used for meditation and burial.

The Tibetan Buddhist culture is ever-present, from mani stone walls and prayer flags to the friendly Lobas (Mustang locals) you meet in villages.

Along the way, you’ll also enjoy stunning Himalayan views: snow-capped peaks like Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri form a majestic backdrop above the arid valley. All these elements make the Upper Mustang Trek a special journey into a living museum of ancient Himalayan life.

Upper Mustang Trek Permits & Rules

Upper Mustang is a Restricted Area in Nepal, so special permits and regulations apply. Independent trekking is not allowed here – the Nepalese government strictly enforces rules to protect the region’s delicate culture and border security. Here’s what you need to know about permits and rules:

Restricted Area Permit (RAP): Every foreign trekker must obtain a RAP for Upper Mustang. As of 2026, the cost is USD $50 per person per day in Upper Mustang. You pay for the exact number of days you’ll spend in the restricted area ($500 for 10 days; $50 for each additional day beyond 10).

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Upper Mustang lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area, so you also need an ACAP entry permit. The cost is NPR 3,000 per person (around $25–$30)

In summary, permits and rules for the Upper Mustang Trek are non-negotiable. Budget about $530+ in permit fees per person (for 10 days RAP + ACAP) and plan to hire a guide through an agency. These measures ensure that the “Forbidden Kingdom” remains protected even as it opens to limited tourism

Why is the Guide Mandatory for Upper Mustang Trek?

Guides are mandatory in Upper Mustang for both legal and practical reasons. Firstly, the Nepalese government requires a licensed guide to accompany all trekkers in restricted areas like Upper Mustang. This rule is strictly enforced at checkpoints to ensure no unauthorised or solo travel in the border region. But beyond the legal requirement, having a guide is extremely beneficial for trekkers:

The mandatory guide rule is there to keep you safe, make your trip smoother, and preserve the unique culture and nature of Upper Mustang. Trekkers often find that a good guide enhances the experience immensely, turning a difficult journey into a more enjoyable and educational adventure. Given the remoteness and restrictions of Mustang, having a knowledgeable companion is not a burden but a valuable asset.

Best Time for 14 Day Upper Mustang Trek

Timing your Upper Mustang Trek is important for the best experience. The Upper Mustang is in the rain shadow of the Himalayas. It means that it is feasible even during the summer monsoon months.

Spring (March–May): Spring is one of the best times for Upper Mustang. The weather is mild to warm, with daytime temperatures comfortable for trekking and clear skies offering superb mountain views. Overall, March, April, and May provide excellent conditions, and many trekkers aim to be in Lo Manthang in May to witness the vibrant Tiji Festival dances.

Autumn (September–November): Autumn is the most popular trekking season in Nepal, and Upper Mustang is no exception. After the summer rains, the weather in Mustang is dry and stable. September to November feature crystal-clear skies, excellent visibility of the Himalayas, and pleasant temperatures (though late autumn brings colder nights). Do expect more trekkers on the trail in autumn, but Upper Mustang is never as crowded as, say, the Annapurna or Everest regions.

Monsoon/Summer (June–August): Surprisingly, monsoon is a viable time to trek in Upper Mustang because the region receives very little rain in summer. While the rest of Nepal is wet and muddy, Mustang’s climate remains mostly dry.

What to Pack for Upper Mustang Trek 14 Days?

Packing wisely is essential for a 14-day Upper Mustang Trek, as you’ll encounter a range of conditions from hot sunny days to chilly nights. Being a remote trek, you should be self-sufficient with clothing and basics (there are no gear shops once you start). Here are the key items and gear to include:

Clothing Upper & Lower:

  • Base Layers and Thermals, Tops and Bottoms
  • Fleece Jacket and Down Jacket
  • Quick Dry T-shirts
  • Trekking Pants and Trousers
  • Hiking Shorts
  • Gloves and Wollen Hat
  • Woollen Socks

Trekking Gear:

  • Sleeping Bag and Trekking Poles
  • Day Backpack and Duffel Bag
  • Water bottle and Water purification Tablet

Extra Essential:

  • First Aid Kit and Personal Medication
  • Toiletries
  • Extra batteries and charger
  • Skin care items
  • Nepalese currency
  • Passport copies

By packing these essentials, you’ll be well-prepared for the Upper Mustang Trek. Remember that the weather can change quickly in the Himalayas – layers and versatile gear are key. Keep your pack weight reasonable (around 10–12kg for your personal pack if a porter carries the rest, or ~15kg if you’re self-supported). With the right gear, you can focus on enjoying the trek without worrying about the elements.

Place to stay during the 14-day trek to Upper Mustang: Teahouse

The Upper Mustang Trek is a tea-house trek, meaning you will stay in local lodges (guesthouses) each night rather than camping. This makes the journey more comfortable compared to fully camping expeditions, but accommodations are relatively basic due to Mustang’s remoteness. Here’s what to expect from the tea house experience in Upper Mustang:

Tea houses in Mustang are usually simple stone or mud-brick buildings run by local families. Rooms are basic twin-share, with a wooden bed, mattress, pillow and blanket. Bathrooms are frequently shared outhouses or indoor squat toilets. Hot showers, if available, usually come with an extra charge.

Food to eat during the 14-Day Upper Mustang Trek

Food on the Upper Mustang Trek is surprisingly varied and plentiful, given the remote location. You will take your meals at the tea houses along the route, which typically offer a menu of Nepali, Tibetan, and basic Western dishes to fuel trekkers for long walking days. Here’s what you can expect in terms of dining:

Breakfast Items: Tibetan Bread, Pancakes, egg items, potato dishes, Chapati, Tsampa Porridge,

Lunch & Dinner: Nepali Daal Bhaat, Momos, Thukpa, Yeak Steak, pasta, macaroni, chow Mein (stir-fried noodles), fried rice, French fries, Pizza, Spring Roll, Plain Rice, Vegetable Curry, Fruit Salad, Vegetable Salad, etc.

Overall, food during the Mustang trek is one of the trek’s pleasures – you need the energy, and sitting in a warm dining hall enjoying a plate of hot dal bhat or a bowl of thukpa after a dusty day on the trail is incredibly satisfying.
