It takes you to the popular Poon Hill viewpoint for the Sunrise over snowcapped Peaks. Next, trekker will march ahead to the Annapurna Base Camp at 4130 meters, which is surrounded by massive vistas including Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Nilgiri, Hiunchuli, etc.

Every day brings new landscapes – from the vibrant villages of Gurung and Magar communities to the high alpine bowl of Annapurna. Our 12-Day Ghorepani ABC Trek Itinerary is carefully designed for those who want to explore the sunrise beauty of Poon Hill. Then next, to stand tall at the foothill of the 10th-highest peak in the world, Annapurna I. Moreover, this trek is moderately difficult with decent fitness; any traveller can complete this trek.

Ghorepani ABC Trek with Poon Hill Sunrise

One of the biggest highlights of the Ghorepani ABC Trek is witnessing the sunrise from Poon Hill. Poon Hill (3,210 m) is a famous viewpoint above the village of Ghorepani, known for its panoramic dawn vistas. Trekkers wake up before dawn (around 4–5 AM) and hike about 45 minutes up a gradual trail to reach the hilltop in time for sunrise.

As the sun rises, it casts golden light across a 360° Himalayan panorama – Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Annapurna I (8,091 m),Annapurna South,Machapuchare (6,993 m), and other peaks gradually light up. By combining Poon Hill sunrise with the ABC trek, you ensure your adventure includes one of Nepal’s most famous viewpoints along with reaching Annapurna Base Camp itself.

Why Combine the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with ABC?

ABC Trek via Poon Hill is a double adventure in a single trip. The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is a shorter 3–5 day trek on its own, and the ABC trek typically takes 7–9 days. By merging them into a Ghorepani ABC Trek, you get the best features of both treks without needing two separate journeys. Here are the key reasons trekkers love this combined route:

  • Unbeatable Views: Poon Hill offers a wide-angle sunrise panorama of the Himalayas early in the trek, while Annapurna Base Camp places you in the midst of towering peaks towards the end.
  • Gradual Acclimatisation: Tackling Poon Hill first means you ascend to 3,200 m, then drop back to 2,700 m (Tadapani) before ascending higher towards ABC (4,130 m).
  • Cultural & Scenic Diversity: The Ghorepani Poon Hill and ABC take you through vibrant Gurung and Magar villages and blooming rhododendron forests to deep valleys, bamboo groves, high alpine meadows, and glacial views.
  • Two Major Highlights in One Trip: If you have limited time in Nepal, doing Poon Hill + ABC together is very efficient.
  • Route Variation: The combined Poon Hill ABC Trek itinerary is typically a loop trail, meaning you don’t retrace all your steps.

In summary, combining the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with ABC offers greater rewards and a fuller experience for only a couple of extra days of trekking.

Itinerary

Your adventure begins with a travel day from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Most trekkers take a tourist bus along the Prithvi Highway, a scenic 200 km drive (6–7 hours) following rivers and hills. Pokhara (822 m) is Nepal’s beautiful lakeside city and the gateway to Annapurna treks. In the afternoon, you can relax by Phewa Lake and double-check your gear. Overnight in a Pokhara hotel, with trek departure early next morning.

  • Max Altitude:850 meters
  • Accommodation:3-Star Hotel
  • Time:7-8 Hours

After breakfast, a private vehicle takes you on a 1–1.5-hour drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, the starting point for trekking. At Nayapul/Birethanti, you’ll show your permits at the checkpoint and then begin walking.

The trail follows the Modi Khola river valley, passing through Birethanti (1,035 m) and Hile. You’ll trek through farming villages and cross suspension bridges over streams. After lunch around Tikhedhunga, get ready for a tough ascent: the Ulleri stone steps. There are over 3,000 stone stairs to climb from the river up to Ulleri village. Overnight stay at Ulleri.

  • Max Altitude:1960m
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:5-6 Hours
  • Meals:Lunch and Dinner

Today’s trek is short and easy. Leaving Ulleri, the trail continues uphill but on a gentler trail. You’ll hike through enchanting rhododendron forests and pass small villages like Banthanti and Nangethanti. The path has sections of stone steps and a dirt trail winding upward. After 4–5 hours (about 8 km), you arrive at Ghorepani (2,874 m). “Ghorepani” means “horse water” – historically a watering stop for mule caravans.

Now it’s a lively trekking crossroads with many lodges. On arrival, you might catch sunset views: Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) and Annapurna South (7,219 m) can sometimes be seen from upper Ghorepani before dusk. Overnight stay at Ghorepani.

  • Max Altitude:2874 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:4-5 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Wake up around 4:30 AM, sip some tea, and begin the hike to Poon Hill with headlamps lighting the way. It’s about 1 km uphill (300 m ascent), which takes 45–60 minutes.

At the summit, join trekkers from around the world awaiting sunrise. The Poon Hill sunrise is simply awe-inspiring – watch as Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), the Annapurna range, and even far-off Manaslu begin to glow. On clear days, you can count a dozen snow peaks. After snapping plenty of photos and maybe enjoying a mug of coffee from the viewpoint shack, you’ll descend to Ghorepani for breakfast.

Refuelled, you’ll then continue the trek towards Tadapani. The trail from Ghorepani initially climbs to a ridge and then traverses through lush forests with occasional clearings. You’ll notice the path is a bit quieter now as many trekkers who came only for Poon Hill will head back – but you are continuing onward to ABC. The route undulates through rhododendron and oak woods. Overnight at a Tadapani teahouse.

  • Max Altitude:2610 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:6-7 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today you’ll connect with the main Annapurna Sanctuary trail. From Tadapani, the path first descends steeply through a beautiful mossy forest. After about an hour, you emerge onto terraces and reach Chuile, a small Gurung village. Here, instead of taking the right trail toward Ghandruk, you keep left and descend to the Kimrong Khola. Cross a suspension bridge over the stream, then prepare for a long ascent to Chhomrong. Overnight stay at Chommrong.

  • Max Altitude:2170 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:6-7 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast with a view, you start by descending Chhomrong’s famous stone steps all the way down to the Chhomrong Khola (river) at the bottom of the valley. Immediately after crossing the bridge, it’s time to regain all that lost altitude with a steep climb up to Sinuwa. From Upper Sinuwa onward, the trail enters a dense bamboo and rhododendron forest.

Continue to Bamboo (2,300 m), named for the thick bamboo groves. Have lunch there, then trek on to Dovan (2,500 m) and eventually to the Himalaya (often referring to the Himalaya Hotel, 2,920 m). Overnight stay at the Himalaya Hotel.

  • Max Altitude:2920 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:7-8 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Leaving Himalaya, you climb through a damp forest to Deurali (3,230 m), the last teahouse stop before the base camps. Notice vegetation is now sparse – shrubs and grass replace tall trees.

Passing Deurali, you enter the Annapurna Sanctuary valley, a wide, steep-walled valley carved by glaciers. The trail often follows the riverbed and can be rocky. You might see snow piles or landslide remnants along the narrow trail. After a steady 2–3 hour ascent from Deurali, you arrive at Machapuchare Base Camp (3,700 m) around midday. Depending on your itinerary and how you feel, you might overnight here.

  • Max Altitude:3700 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:3-4 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A short but exciting day. From MBC, it’s a moderate 1.5–2 hour hike (about 4 km) to Annapurna Base Camp. You ascend a broad grassy slope; with every step, the panorama widens. Upon reaching ABC (4,130 m), you’ll see a collection of 4–5 lodges and prayer flags marking the area.

Congratulations – you’ve made it to Annapurna Base Camp, the ultimate goal of this trek! Here you stand at the foot of Annapurna I (the world’s 10th highest mountain) and in the presence of giants: Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Tent Peak, Baraha Shikhar, Gangapurna, and Machapuchare forming a 360° wall around the sanctuary. Looking up, you can often hear distant rumbles of avalanches on the surrounding slopes. Overnight stay at ABC.

  • Max Altitude:4130 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:2-3 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After an unforgettable sunrise over Annapurna I, it’s time to head back. You retrace your steps out of the Sanctuary, descending all the way to Bamboo in one long day. Typically, you’ll depart ABC in the morning after breakfast, descend past MBC and Deurali, and continue down.

It’s mostly downhill, which is easier on the lungs but can be tough on knees – again, trekking poles and a controlled pace help. By the time you reach Himalaya or Dovan for lunch, you’re back below 3,000 m and likely feeling great with the extra oxygen. Continue through the bamboo forests to Bamboo village (2,310 m) for an overnight stay.

  • Max Altitude:2310 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:6-7 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Begin with a climb back up from Bamboo to Sinuwa – yes, unfortunately, that means gaining a few hundred meters again, including the section to Chhomrong. You’ll ascend to Sinuwa and then to the ridge by Chhomrong. Once at Chhomrong, you can take a brief break. Then comes a steep descent of 600 m down stone steps to the Modi Khola valley, where Jhinu Danda (1,780 m) lies.

Jhinu is famed for its natural hot springs by the river. You’ll reach Jhinu by early to mid-afternoon after about 5 hours of trekking. Drop your bags at the lodge and head 15 minutes downhill to the Jhinu Hot Springs – three pools of warm mineral water by the riverside. Jhinu has a fun atmosphere as many groups celebrate completing the trek.

  • Max Altitude:1780 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:4-5 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The trekking portion officially concludes today. From Jhinu, you’ll trek 2–3 hours to Siwai or Matque, where a road access is available. The trail is mostly downhill or riverside, passing small settlements and terraced fields. At Siwai (or New Bridge), a jeep or vehicle will meet you for the drive back to Pokhara. The drive takes around 3 hours via Nayapul. By midday or afternoon, you’ll be back in Pokhara (822 m). Congratulations on completing the Ghorepani – Annapurna Base Camp Trek!

  • Max Altitude:850 m

    Good to Know

Best time for Ghorepani ABC Trek

The best time to trek the Ghorepani Poon Hill – Annapurna Base Camp route is during the spring (March–May) and autumn (Sept–Nov) seasons. These periods offer the most stable weather and clearest mountain views:

Autumn (Sept–Nov): Post-monsoon skies are crystal clear, giving outstanding views day after day. Days are comfortably warm at lower elevations and cool at higher camps; nights are chilly. The forests are lush after the rains. Autumn is Nepal’s peak trekking season – especially October and early November – so trails and teahouses will be busy. It’s a festive time too (with Dashain/Tihar holidays).

Spring (Mar–May): Second most popular season. The weather is mild – cold nights but generally slightly warmer than autumn – and the trail comes alive with blooming rhododendrons in March/April. By late spring, the forests at Ghorepani are a riot of red and pink blossoms. Views are usually great in the mornings, though by May, the afternoon clouds can build up.

12- Day Ghorepani ABC Trek packing list

Packing wisely is key to a comfortable trek. You’ll be dealing with warm days in the low hills and cold nights at base camp, so layers are essential. Here’s what we recommend:

    Clothing:

    • Inner Thermals and Layers
    • Quick Dry T-shirt
    • Trekking Pants and Trousers
    • Fleece Jacket and Down Jacket
    • Hiking Shorts
    • Woollen Hat and Neck Warmer
    • Wollen Gloves

    Trekking Gear:

    • Trekking Backpack 60-70 L or Duffel Bag (If hiring a porter)
    • Trekking poles and a Water bottle
    • Sleeping Bag
    • Quality Trekking Boot

    Miscellaneous:

    • Camera or smartphone (plus charger or spare battery). There is limited electricity at some lodges – charging costs around $1–3/hour. A power bank is useful.
    • Lightweight towel, toiletries (toothbrush, biodegradable soap, etc.), and wet wipes (for “showers” on cold days).
    • Earplugs (teahouse walls are thin – you might appreciate these at night).
    • Snacks like energy bars, trail mix (you can buy along the way, but selection may vary).
    • Copies of your documents: passport, visa, permits (your guide will also manage permits, but it’s good to have a photocopy).

Pro tip: You can buy or rent almost any gear in Kathmandu or Pokhara, from down jackets to poles – at much lower prices than back home. Don’t worry if you forget something; the trekking shops have you covered. Just make sure your boots are broken in beforehand to avoid blisters. Also, get detailed information regarding Common Trekking Gear for Nepal from here.

Fitness Required for 12-Day Ghorepani ABC Trek

For the Ghorepani ABC Trek, preparation and baseline fitness will go a long way in making the trek safe and enjoyable. Here’s what we recommend in terms of fitness:

    • Aim to be comfortable with activities like jogging, brisk walking, cycling, or swimming for at least an hour at a time.
    • Strong legs (quads, calves) and knees help in tackling steep sections and long descents. Do exercises like squats, lunges, and step-ups can strengthen those muscles.
    • If possible, do a few practice hikes in your area wearing the boots you’ll use. Hike with a loaded daypack (5–6 kg) to simulate trek conditions.
    • Learn about altitude sickness and the prevention of the sickness.
    • Start training at least 8–12 weeks in advance. Begin with 30-minute cardio sessions 3 times a week, then build up to 1 hour+, and add a longer hike on weekends.
    • Stretching and flexibility can prevent injuries.
    • The trek can be tiring and there may be moments you feel exhausted or sore. A positive attitude and determination are crucial.

During Trek Tips: Even the fittest trekkers need to pace themselves at altitude. Walk at a conversational pace.

In conclusion, prepare with regular cardio and leg workouts, and you’ll find the Ghorepani ABC Trek quite manageable. Even if you’re a beginner to trekking, with 2–3 months of prep, many beginners successfully do this trek.

Tea house accommodation on 12-Day Ghorepani ABC Trek

Tea house lodging is the standard on this trek – you’ll stay in family-run lodges in each village. It’s a comfortable and authentic way to experience the local culture.

Tea house rooms are basic but cosy, usually with two single beds, a pillow, and a blanket. At lower elevations, rooms are in simple stone or wood buildings, and some lodges offer attached bathrooms or hot showers. At higher stops, lodges are more rustic – think plywood walls and shared facilities. In peak season, you might have to share a room or sleep in a dormitory with 4–6 beds.

Dining & Food in Ghorepani and ABC Trek Route

Every tea house has a common dining hall, usually heated in the evening by a wood or yak-dung stove. This is where trekkers gather, eat, and socialise. The meals are singly extensive – almost all lodges cook variations of dal bhat (the traditional rice-lentil curry meal), which is filling and offers free refills.

Breakfast Items: Tibetan Bread, Toast, Egg items, Potato Dishes, Pan Cakes, Porridge, Muesli, Cereals, and hot drinks

Lunch and Dinner: You’ll find noodles, fried rice, momos, pasta, Daal Bhaat, Spring Roll, Burger, Chow mein, Pasta, Macaroni, and even pizza on some menus.

    Ghorepani ABC Trek difficulty level

The Ghorepani ABC Trek is considered a moderate trek. It’s challenging but very doable th basic fitness. Here’s why it’s moderate:

    1. Trail conditions of the Ghorepani ABC Trek is well established with no rugged terrain. Although the trail involves a lot of ascent and descent.
    2. The highest point is Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m (13,550 ft). This altitude can cause mild acute mountain sickness (AMS) in some people if you ascend too fast.
    3. We rate it moderate because while it’s not easy, it’s far from the hardest. Even if you are a first-time trekker, you can complete the Ghorepani ABC trek with some training.
    4. In summary, expect a mix of stone steps, forest trails, and some rocky sections in the Sanctuary. We classify it as moderate because while there are steep sections, they are interspersed with easier stretches.

In conclusion, the Ghorepani Poon Hill – Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a moderate adventure suitable for anyone in decent shape. As long as you’re willing to trek for several hours, handle some big climbs/descents, and take care of yourself at altitude, you’ll do great.

Ghorepani ABC Trek – With a Guide or Porter?

Trekking with a professional guide and/or porter is highly recommended for the Ghorepani ABC Trek – and as of 2023, it’s actually required for foreign trekkers in Nepal’s main trekking region.

A licensed guide will keep you on the right trail, set a safe pace, and handle all the logistics (permits, accommodations). Moreover, our Guides are usually from the local region and can enrich your experience by explaining cultural sites, local customs, and the names of mountains.

If you hire a porter, you won’t have to carry the heavy loads. A porter can carry about 15–20 kg of your gear, leaving you with just a light daypack. This makes the trek much easier physically, especially on those steep uphill days. Even with a guide alone, you still benefit from someone handling route-finding, tea house reservations, and meal orders, so you can simply enjoy the hike. Our package trips include a guide (and a porter for every two trekkers) to make sure you have the best possible experience without extra burdens.

In terms of cost, guides typically charge around $30–$35 per day and porters about $20–$22 per day (this usually includes their food, accommodation, and insurance).
