The Kala Patthar hike in Nepal is an unmissable adventure for trekkers on the Everest Base Camp (EBC) trail. This relatively short yet steep hike takes you to the famous Kala Patthar summit, a rocky vantage point offering a close-up view of Mount Everest.

Trekkers often hike to this viewpoint early morning to witness a breathtaking sunrise view above Everest and the surrounding peaks in golden hues. At 5,545 meters, Kala Patthar is higher than Everest Base Camp itself, rewarding you with a panoramic Himalayan sunrise like no other.

Along with Everest, you’ll see giants like Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, and Ama Dablam looming around you. The Kala Patthar hike is usually done as part of an EBC Trek 12 Days. Most trekkers reach Gorakshep after about a week of trekking. Then ascend Kala Patthar either that evening for sunset or early the next morning for sunrise.

Kala Patthar sunrise hike experience

Embarking on a Kala Patthar sunrise hike is a magical experience etched into every trekker’s memory. In the frigid early morning hours, you start hiking from Gorakshep by headlamp, crunching over frost and gravel under a starry sky. After about two hours of uphill push, the horizon begins to glow.

Upon reaching the Kala Patthar Peak with prayer flags, you are greeted by the first rays of sunlight kissing the tip of Mount Everest. As the sun hits Everest’s peak, the mountain glows in brilliant shades of gold and orange – a stunning spectacle that makes the tough climb worthwhile.

From this vantage point, you have a 360° panorama of the Himalayas: Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, Ama Dablam, and more all come into view. The sunrise over Everest is often described as a once-in-a-lifetime moment, igniting the sky and your spirit in equal measure. After soaking in the sights and snapping photos of the Everest sunrise panorama, you’ll likely only spend 15–20 minutes at the windy top before descending.

You return to Gorakshep with frozen cheeks, full memory cards, and a profound sense of awe. Many trekkers consider the Kala Patthar sunrise view the highlight of their Everest Base Camp Trek 14 Days Journey— no other part of the trek quite compares to the Kala Patthar hike.

How Difficult is the Kala Patthar hike

The Kala Patthar hike is short but challenging due to the extreme altitude and steep terrain. From Gorakshep (about 5,164 m) to the summit (around 5,545 m), you gain roughly 400 meters of elevation in a relatively short distance.

The trail is a rugged path of loose rocks and switchbacks; there are no technical climbing sections, but the uphill slog in thin air will test your endurance. Even trekkers who felt fine reaching Base Camp often find themselves short of breath on Kala Patthar’s ascent. The cold and wind can add to the difficulty, especially in pre-dawn hours or during winter months.

Overall, Kala Patthar is a tough hike – not because of distance, but because your body is operating at over 5,000 m altitude. Expect to take it slow and steady; a moderate to high fitness level and proper acclimatisation are essential.

    Good to Know

    Lukla and Ramechhap flight details

In the peak trekking season, there is no direct flight from Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu. Instead, you need to drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap for 4-5 hours and take a flight from Manthali Airport. However, in the off-season (Monsoon and Winter), the flight directly operates to Lukla. Hence, it is better to have some extra days on your trip to Nepal for the Kala Patthar Hike.

Best Time to do the Kala Patthar Hike

Choosing the best time to hike Kala Patthar is crucial for safety and views. The prime trekking seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November).

During these months, the weather in the Everest region is relatively stable with clear skies, minimal precipitation, and moderate temperatures – ideal for catching that crystal-clear sunrise view of Everest.

In spring, the trail is alive with rhododendron blooms, and the mornings are crisp but not frigid, while autumn offers sparkling visibility and dry conditions after the monsoon rains. These seasons are also peak trekking periods, meaning trails and teahouses will be busy, but the vibrant atmosphere and higher chance of unobstructed views make it worthwhile.

In short, plan your Kala Patthar hike for spring or autumn for the best combination of clear Everest vistas, safer trail conditions, and enjoyable trekking weather.

Teahouses in Everest during the Kala Patthar Trek

One of the comforts of trekking in Nepal is the network of teahouses along the route. Throughout the entire trail from Lukla (2,800 m) up to Gorakshep (5,180 m), teahouses are the primary accommodation option for Everest trekkers.

These are family-run lodges offering basic rooms and hearty meals – a welcome refuge after a long day’s hike. As you progress higher, the teahouses become more basic due to the remote, harsh conditions.

In villages like Namche Bazaar and Tengboche, you’ll find cosy lodges with a wider range of amenities. At higher stops like Dingboche, Lobuche, and especially Gorakshep, the final settlement before Base Camp, facilities are more rudimentary. In Gorakshep, there are only a handful of teahouses, and they fill up fast during peak season – expect simple unheated rooms, shared bathrooms, limited electricity, and a menu of filling carbs to fuel your ascent.

Part of the Kala Patthar hike adventure is embracing the rustic teahouse experience – swapping stories with fellow trekkers around the dining room stove, all eager for the next morning’s climb to Kala Patthar.

Permits required to do the Kala Patthar Hike in Everest

The Kala Patthar hike requires two mandatory permits. Firstly, you need the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, since you’ll be entering Sagarmatha National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its high-altitude scenery and wildlife).

Secondly, you must obtain the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit (often simply called the Khumbu rural permit. The Sagarmatha National Park permit costs NPR 3,000 per person (about USD $25–30), and the Khumbu rural permit is NPR 2,000 (around USD $20) per person.

    Kala Patthar hike acclimatisation tips

Proper acclimatisation is key to safely enjoying the Kala Patthar hike, given the extreme altitudes involved. By the time you reach Gorakshep, you’ll be over 5,100 m – if your body isn’t well-adjusted to the thin air, the risk of altitude sickness is high.

    1. Do not rush your ascent; gain elevation gradually and heed your guide’s advice. While trekking, go at a comfortable pace – walking slowly is not a weakness but a smart strategy at altitude.
    2. Stay very well hydrated and avoid alcohol or strenuous exertion in the evenings. Many trekkers also swear by garlic soup and ginger tea, local remedies believed to help with altitude adjustment.
    3. Pay attention to any symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (headache, nausea, dizziness). If you feel unwell at Gorakshep or earlier, inform your guide immediately.
    4. It might be wise to delay the Kala Patthar hike or descend to a lower altitude if symptoms worsen.
    5. Diamox (acetazolamide) is a medication that can aid acclimatisation – consult your doctor before the trip if you plan to use it. Also, make sure you’re adequately insured for high-altitude trekking in case evacuation is needed.

The bottom line is: listen to your body and don’t push beyond your limits. With proper acclimatisation and cautious planning, you’ll increase your chances of safely completing the Kala Patthar hike and savouring that amazing view without serious altitude issues.

    FAQs
    • Kala Patthar’s summit is 5,545 meters (18,192 feet) above sea level. This height makes Kala Patthar higher than Everest Base Camp and one of the highest points trekkers can reach in Nepal without a climbing permit.

    • To go to Kala Patthar, you need to Hike from Gorakshep for 2-3 hours. However, you can also do the Everest Heli Tour and Land at Kala Patthar for 5-10 minutes.

    • Kala Patthar is famous because it offers the most iconic, panoramic view of Mount Everest and the surrounding Himalayas that trekkers can reach without mountaineering. Unlike at Everest Base Camp, on Kala Patthar you get a clear sightline to Everest’s summit, as well as sweeping vistas of Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumori, the Khumbu Icefall, and more – all in one grand scene.

    • It’s considered a moderately difficult hike – short in distance but hard due to the high altitude. The trail itself is steep and rocky. The main challenge is the thin air above 5,000 m, which makes any exertion feel exhausting. Good fitness and acclimatization are important, but even then you’ll likely find it tough but doable

    • Yes, you can do the Kala Patthar Hike alone. However, Hiking at High altitudes without a guide is always a risk. Hence, we can arrange an experienced guide for your journey to Kala Patthar.

    • The Kala Patthar hike from Gorakshep is approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) one-way. Don’t let the short distance fool you, though. That 1.5 km is mostly uphill on a rugged trail with about 350–400 m of elevation gain, so it feels much longer.

    • From Gorakshep, it typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to hike up to Kala Patthar’s summit, and around 1 hour to descend. In total, allow 3 to 4 hours for the round-trip Kala Patthar hike.

    • The best time is during pre-monsoon spring (March–May) or post-monsoon autumn (late Sept–Nov). In these seasons, the weather is generally clear and stable, offering the best views of Everest and safer trail conditions. Spring has blooming rhododendrons and milder mornings (though it’s still cold up high), while autumn brings crisp air and excellent visibility. Winter treks are possible for experienced adventurers (expect frigid temperatures and some snow), and monsoon season is not recommended due to heavy rain and clouds obscuring the peaks.

    • Hiring a guide is highly recommended for the Kala Patthar hike. A professional guide can greatly enhance your experience by managing logistics, monitoring your health, and sharing local insights. They also provide peace of mind on the early morning Kala Patthar ascent, which can be tricky to navigate in the dark.

    • You will need the same permits required for the Everest Base Camp trek: the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. The national park permit (NPR 3,000) is obtainable at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or at the park entrance in Monjo. The rural municipality permit (NPR 2,000) can be obtained in Lukla or Monjo at the start of the trek. Mountain Eco Trails Helps in arranging these permits for you.

    • It takes 8-10 days to hike to Kala Patthar. Nevertheless, you can go to Kala Patthar in a day by Helicopter.

    • The Kala Patthar hike is typically included in a broader Everest Base Camp trek package. For 2026, a standard guided EBC trek (12–14 days including Kala Patthar) costs roughly USD $1,300 to $1,800 per person. This range usually covers permits, domestic flights to Lukla, guide and porter services, accommodations, and meals during the trek.

    • Kala Patthar delivers 360-degree views of mountains whereas EBC takes you near to the Himalayan peaks.
