Best Time for the Classic Trek to Annapurna Circuit

The best time for the Classic Trek to Annapurna Circuit is the Autumn and Spring seasons. Climatic conditions in the Annapurna region are the primary determinant of success and safety. The year is divided into two peak seasons and two off-seasons, each offering a distinct experience.

    Autumn (September – November)

This is widely regarded as the premier window for the classic Annapurna circuit. The post-monsoon atmosphere is clean of dust, offering "impeccable mountain views" and the highest visibility. Temperatures are mild during the day, although they drop below freezing at night in the higher settlements. This season sees the highest success rates for crossing Thorong La Pass.

The Bloom: Spring (March – May)

Spring is the second most popular time, characterised by blooming rhododendrons in the lower forests and longer daylight hours. While mornings are generally clear, afternoon clouds are more common than in autumn. This is an ideal time for photography enthusiasts interested in flora and fauna.

Permits Required for the Classic Annapurna Circuit (ACAP, TIMS)

To do this 16-Day Classic Annapurna Circuit requires two specific documents, which are checked at various checkpoints. Here are the permits required for the Classic Annapurna Circuit Trek

    1. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

This permit is mandatory for all international visitors entering the protected zone. As of 2026, the fee for foreign nationals is NPR 3,000 (approximately $25).

    2. Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Card

The TIMS card is a critical safety component managed by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and the Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN). The cost for a TIMS card is approximately NPR 2,000 ($15-$20) for independent-style travellers, though it is usually handled by the agency for those on group tours.

How Difficult Is the Classic Annapurna Circuit Trek?

The difficulty of the classic Annapurna circuit is generally categorised as "moderate to challenging". Physically, the trek demands the stamina to walk 160+ over two weeks while carrying a daypack. The daily elevation gain average is roughly 600 to 800 meters, which places significant stress on the cardiovascular system. Mentally, the challenge lies in the "multi-day grind"—the ability to maintain focus and energy through varying weather conditions and simple teahouse living for 15+ consecutive days.

This trek is best suited for trekkers with:

    • Prior multi-day trekking experience
    • Good cardiovascular fitness
    • Comfort walking 6–8 hours per day at altitude

    Altitude Facts

    • Highest point: Thorong La Pass – 5,416m
    • Key acclimatisation stops: Manang – 3,540m
    • Gradual ascent minimises altitude-related risks
    • While technically non-climbing, the altitude and long duration demand preparation and respect for the mountains.
