About Gosaikunda Lake and Its Location

Gosaikunda (or Gosainkunda) Lake is a high-altitude freshwater lake situated in Rasuwa District of northern Nepal. Also, it is a part of Langtang National Park. Located at 4,380 meters (14,370 ft), this sacred lake is surrounded by rugged terrain and dozens of other smaller holy lakes.

According to Hindu mythology, the lake was created by Lord Shiva. He thrust his trident into the mountain to unleash water and soothe his throat after swallowing poison, thus forming the lake.

The lake is considered the abode of Lord Shiva and is the focal point of an annual pilgrimage during the Janai Purnima festival (full moon of August), when thousands of devotees trek up to bathe in its icy waters. Buddhists likewise regard Gosaikunda as sacred, performing rituals to honor departed souls at the lake.

Combined Trek of Langtang Valley and Gosaikunda Lake in 12 Days

This 12-day Journey in the Langtang Region is a combined trek of Langtang Valley and Gosaikunda Lake. It offers an excellent experience of the whole Langtang circuit.

The first part will follow the classic Langtang Valley Trek route: starting from Syabrubesi (1,500 m), you trek through dense forests and river gorges up to Langtang Village and Kyanjin Gompa. You’ll pass through the Tamang Villages, that is rich in Himalayan Buddhist culture. Whereas trekking through the Langtang National Park showcases Himalayan wildlife and alpine vegetation. Side hikes to viewpoints such as Tsergo Ri (5,000 m) or Kyanjin Ri (4,700 m) offer breathtaking 360° panoramas of the Langtang Himalayas. At Kyanjin Gompa (3,800 m), you can also visit the local cheese factory to taste fresh yak cheese, a specialty of the area.

After exploring the beauty of the Langtang Village, the journey moves ahead to the Gosaikunda Trek route. Trek back to Lama Hotel, retracing the same route at first. Then, follow the trail of Thulo Syabru, and you ascend towards the high lakes. The Gosaikunda Trek route then follows the trail of rhododendron forests and reaches Sing Gompa (also known as Chandanbari, 3,330 m).

From there, a challenging hike leads to Lauribina and onwards to Gosaikunda. Finally, you reach Gosaikunda Lake (4,380 m), surrounded by rocky hills and crowned by an atmosphere of serenity. In August, during Janai Purnima, this area teems with pilgrims, but during regular trekking seasons it’s a tranquil haven of alpine beauty.

By combining Langtang Valley and Gosaikunda in one itinerary, trekkers achieve a well-rounded experience: cultural exploration, wildlife and nature, panoramic mountain vistas, and a spiritual pilgrimage site all in one trip. The trek can be considered a mini-circuit of the Langtang region; hence, it’s sometimes dubbed the Langtang Circuit Trek.

Itinerary

Your 12- Day Langtang Gosainkunda Trek begins with an early morning drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, a small town in Rasuwa District, which is the starting point of the classic Langtang Valley Trek. The drive takes about 7-8 hours by private jeep or public bus, winding out of the Kathmandu Valley and along the Trishuli River. You’ll enjoy sights of terraced fields, rustic villages, and distant mountains on clear days during the drive. The road is mountainous and partly rough, especially after Dhunche, but the scenery is engaging. You arrive in Syabrubesi (1,500 m) by late afternoon. Syabrubesi is a modest village with guesthouses, and it’s the last chance to double-check your gear or buy any missing supplies. Overnight at a teahouse in Syabrubesi.

  • Max Altitude:1500 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:7-8 Hours
  • Meals:Lunch and Dinner

The first day of trekking starts from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel. At first After cross a suspension bridge over the Bhote Koshi and Langtang rivers, the trail initially follows the Langtang Khola upstream. You’ll hike through lush forest, with the path weaving through oaks, rhododendrons, and bamboo groves. This region is part of Langtang National Park, so keep an eye out for wildlife – gray langur monkeys and diverse birdlife are commonly spotted, and red pandas inhabit these forests (though they’re very shy). The trail gently undulates with both ascents and descents through Domen and Bamboo. Then, from here, the slow and gentle climb will take you to Lama Hotel for an Overnight stay.

  • Max Altitude:2400 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:4-5 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After a hearty mountain breakfast, you continue up the Langtang Village. The trail from Lama Hotel steadily ascends through dense forests. As you gain elevation, the vegetation transitions from subtropical to more alpine. After about 2 hours, you reach Ghodatabela (3,030 m), which means “Horse Stable”. Here, the forest starts to thin and you get your first glimpses of Langtang Lirung’s snow-capped peak looming ahead. The trail and valley open up, revealing rocky streams and yak pastures. From here, you will pass prayer wheels, mani stone walls, and chortens as you start entering inhabited areas. Small settlements like Thangshyap and Ghumba line the path. By late afternoon, you arrive at Langtang Village for an Overnight stay.

  • Max Altitude:3400 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:5-6 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is a shorter, easier hike to allow for acclimatization. Departing Langtang Village, the trail winds through yak pastures and gradually climbs the widening valley. The scenery is spectacular as the tree line drops away, you’ll walk amidst thorny bushes, juniper, and wildflowers (in summer) along a glacial moraine. After about 2-3 hours of trekking, you reach the high settlement of Kyanjin Gompa (3,800 m) by early lunchtime. Kyanjin Gompa is the last permanent village in the valley and is named after its historic Buddhist monastery.

Upon arrival, you’ll notice several attractions: the Kyanjin Gompa monastery, a local cheese factory, and an array of prayer flags on nearby hills. Towering peaks encircle the area – look for Langtang Lirung to the west, Kinshung and Langtang II to the north, and Yala Peak to the northeast. Overnight stay at Kyanjin Gompa

  • Max Altitude:3800 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:3-4 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today, you are more likely to hike to Tsergo Ri. Although you will have the option to choose Kyanjin Ri, too. But we suggest Hiking Tsergo Ri as it is higher in elevation and offers dozens of mountain views. Many trekkers choose to hike to Tserko Ri (5,000 m), a high viewpoint that offers unmatched panoramic views. Starting early (before dawn) is recommended for a sunrise hike. The climb is steep and takes 5–6 hours round-trip. Reaching the summit of Tserko Ri, you’ll be rewarded with a majestic 360° vista: the Langtang range, including Langtang Lirung and other peaks, glaciers flowing down the valleys, and perhaps even distant peaks like Shishapangma in Tibet on a very clear day. Standing at 5,000 m with the morning sun lighting up the Himalayas is a trek highlight for many.

If you feel like the Tserko Ri Hike is too difficult for you, then hiking to Kyanjin Ri can be a good option for you. And if both the hikes are strenuous, then you can just stroll around the Kyanjin Gompa and enjoy the days with the local people visiting Kyanjin Gompa and the Local Yak Cheese Factory. Overnight stay at Kyanjin Gompa.

  • Max Altitude:5000 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:5-6 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After the enriching time spent at Kyanjin, it’s time to head back down the valley. You will trek back towards Lama Hotel, retracing your steps through Langtang Village and Ghodatabela. As it’s an all-downhill journey. It can be a long trek, but less physically taxing than the ascent. By late afternoon, you arrive back at Lama Hotel (2,400 m), nestled in the greenery beside the river. After the high altitude of the last few days, the air here will feel rich and humid. Overnight stay at Lama Hotel.

  • Max Altitude:2400 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:5-6 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today, you will take another route from Lama Hotel to begin the journey to Gosaikunda Lake. From Lama Hotel, start by trekking down to Paira Lodge and the Landslide area. Shortly after, you’ll encounter a trail split the trail. The familiar path leads back to Syabrubesi, but you will take the upper trail toward Thulo Syabru.

The Gosaikunda Trek route involves a steep ascent away from the river. The ascent is a bit challenging, but it rewards you with lovely views. As you gain altitude on the ridge, you can look across to see the trail you came down from Langtang on the opposite side of the valley. After a few hours upward through forest and terraced hillsides, you reach Thulo Syabru (2,210 m) by afternoon. Overnight stay at Thulo Syabru.

  • Max Altitude:2210 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:6-7 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast in Thulo Syabru, you begin a steady ascent to Sing Gompa (also known as Chandanbari). The trail ascends sharply out of the village through dense pine and rhododendron forest. This is a challenging uphill section, especially at the beginning of the day. You will pass a place called Dursagang (2,660 m), which offers a brief respite and nice views of Langtang and Ganesh Himal behind you. Continuing upward, you might stop for lunch at a teahouse in Phoprang Danda or another small stop like Foprang at around 3,000 m. As you ascend, notice the air getting cooler and thinner; pace yourself and take breaks as needed. The trek continues to Sing Gompa.

From Sing Gompa, you can gaze at the broad valley and maybe even spot Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal peaks if the weather is clear. Overnight stay at Sing Gompa.

  • Max Altitude:3300 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:6-7 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is another exciting day of this trek as you will hike to Gosaikunda Lake. Departing Sing Gompa, the trail moves further up through the forests and alpine terrain. At first, you ascend to Cholangpati (around 3,650 m), which offers views of the peaks. Continuing the ascent, you reach Lauribina (3,910 m). Lauribina offers jaw-dropping views of the Himalayas, including close-up views of Ganesh Himal and Langtang Lirung, and even snow-clad Manaslu to the west.

From Lauribina, the trail becomes steeper and more rugged as you approach the Gosaikunda Lakes. You’ll first come across a couple of smaller lakes: Saraswati Kunda and Bhairav Kunda, considered sacred as well. These lakes set a mystical scene with their calm waters reflecting the sky. A bit further on, after around 5-6 hours of total trekking for the day, you finally arrive at Gosaikunda Lake (4,380 m). After a challenging day of the trek, you will arrive at this place, and finally you did some hard yards to make it to this place. Now, time to have a small celebration with warm tea at the teahouse.

  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After witnessing a memorable sunrise over Gosaikunda – if weather permits, the sun’s first rays hitting the lake and surrounding peaks is magical, you’ll start your return journey. Your Langtang Gosainkunda Trek itinerary heads back down the same way towards Sing Gompa. Retracing your steps, you carefully descend from the rocky heights of Gosaikunda, passing the smaller lakes and Lauribina viewpoint again. Overnight stay at Sing Gompa.

  • Max Altitude:3300
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:4-5 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is the last day of trekking. From Sing Gompa, you’ll follow the trail downhill all the way to Dhunche, the district headquarters. The path is mostly downhill through the forests. Instead of going back via Thulo Syabru, there is a more direct descent to Dhunche. The trail passes through areas called Deurali and Dimsa, and you might join a wider dirt track partway. Expect to walk about 5-6 hours. As you descend more than 1,300 m, the climate becomes sub-tropical again, a pleasant change with thicker air and perhaps some hot weather by the time you reach Dhunche. Overnight stay at Dhunche.

  • Max Altitude:1960 meters
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Time:5-6 Hours
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, bid farewell to the Langtang region and embark on the drive back to Kathmandu. You’ll travel by tourist bus from Dhunche, retracing the winding mountain roads through Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. It takes roughly 6-7 hours to reach Kathmandu. Enjoy final glimpses of the Himalayan foothills, knowing that just beyond those ridges lies the country you trekked through on foot. Upon reaching Kathmandu, we will drop you at your hotel. You can then relax and reflect on your journey or explore the city if you have energy. This concludes the trek. We are glad that you did this trek with no difficulties and choose us as your trekking partner.

Best Time to Trek to Gosaikunda Lake in Nepal

The best time to trek to Gosaikunda Lake is during Nepal’s two main trekking seasons: Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). In these periods, the weather is generally stable, and the views are at their clearest.

Langtang Gosaikunda in Spring (Mar-May)

The months of spring deliver mild to warm temperatures at lower elevations and cool temperatures higher up. The rhododendron forests along the trail bloom brilliantly in March/April. This is a wonderful time for nature lovers; you’ll trek under blossoms and see newborn livestock in villages. By late spring, afternoons can get cloudy, but mornings are usually clear for mountain views. Expect moderate crowds on the trail, especially in April and early May.

Langtang Gosaikunda in Autumn (Sep-Nov)

The months of Autumn are the most popular trekking season in Nepal for good reason. After the monsoon, the air is crystal clear and the mountain vistas are stunning. Days are typically sunny with comfortable temperatures, while nights are colder (especially from late Oct onward).

Meal Items During the Trek to Gosaikunda & Langtang

Meals are a crucial part of staying energized on the trek. During the Langtang Gosaikunda Lake Trek, you will be eating at local teahouses. Mountain Eco Trails’ package includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day on the trail, typically with a range of choices available from the lodge menus. Here’s what to expect:

Common breakfast items in the teahouses include porridge (oatmeal) or muesli with hot milk, pancakes (plain, banana, apple, or chocolate pancake), French toast, Tibetan bread or chapati with jam/butter, and eggs (fried, omelette, boiled, or scrambled). You’ll also have a hot drink: choices typically are tea (black, green, lemon, ginger, or milk tea), coffee, or hot chocolate.

Accommodation Facilities during the 12-Day Langtang Gosaikunda Trek

Accommodation during the Langtang Gosaikunda trek is in Teahouses. Teahouses provide basic but comfortable lodging and are a great way to experience local hospitality. Here’s what to expect from accommodations on the Langtang Gosaikunda route:

Most teahouses in Langtang offer twin-share with two single beds per room. As a standard, Mountain Eco Trails’ package is based on twin-sharing rooms. The rooms usually have a simple bed frame with a foam mattress, a pillow, and a blanket. In higher altitude lodges (Kyanjin, Gosaikunda), nights are very cold, so the teahouse will provide thick blankets; however, it’s highly recommended to bring your own sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C comfort.

Electricity & Charging: Electricity is available in most villages, usually from solar panels or small hydropower. Lower areas have more reliable power. You can typically charge your cameras/phones in the dining hall for a fee (like NPR 100-300 per hour/device).

Altitude Sickness During the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek

The Langtang Gosaikunda Lake Trek reaches elevations above 4,000 m, where the risk of Altitude Sickness (AMS) becomes real. While most trekkers complete the route safely, it’s important to recognize the signs early and follow preventive measures to stay healthy.

Common Symptoms of AMS during the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek

  • Headache, nausea, or dizziness
  • Fatigue and loss of appetite
  • Shortness of breath or disturbed sleep
  • In severe cases: confusion, difficulty walking, or breathlessness at rest (signs of HAPE/HACE)

Preventive Measures

  • Ascend gradually: follow the itinerary without skipping acclimatization days
  • Practice “climb high, sleep low” – hike up but return to a lower altitude to rest
  • Drink 3–4 liters of water or fluids daily
  • Avoid alcohol and excessive exertion
  • Take rest if symptoms appear; don’t ascend further until they improve
  • Consider Diamox (only after consulting your doctor)
  • Always inform your guide about any discomfort
  • If symptoms worsen, descend 300–500 m immediately – it’s the most effective cure

With Mountain Eco Trails’ carefully designed itinerary and experienced guides, the risks are minimized, and you can trek with confidence knowing your safety comes first.
