The Climbing Route for Island Peak Itinerary

The route to Island Peak begins in Lukla and follows the route of the Everest Base Camp Trek. After hiking to Everest Base Camp, the climber will approach the Island Peak Base Camp, where pre-training will be done. Some climbers begin their climbing from the Island Peak Base Camp, whereas others push for the summit from the High Camp.

The route from the High Camp to the summit involves crevasses. However, there is a line of fixed ropes from the High Camp. The last section of the climb is challenging through the steep and narrow ridge. Climbers must be cautious on the final stretch, which is approximately 100 meters long. Though the last stretch is challenging, the views from the top of the peak are surreal.

Difficulty Factors while Climbing Island Peak in Nepal

Having said that, the Island Peak is one of the easiest trekking peaks in Nepal; however, beginners with no climbing experience can find it challenging. There are a few difficulty factors climbers must be aware of during the Island Peak Climb.

  • Challenging final section of the route. The final section of the Island Peak can be risky through the steep and narrow ridge line.

  • Unpredictable weather conditions of the Himalayas. Sometimes, Harsh winds or even the snowfall can be an obstacle during the Island Peak Climb.
  • Mental challenges during tough situations, such as weather changes or sickness-related issues.

      Lukla Flight Information

This is to notify that, during the Peak Trekking Season in Spring and Autumn Season, the Kathmandu to Lukla to Kathmandu flight operates from Ramecchap, Manthali Airport. Hence, we suggest our clients have extra days apart from the 18-Day Island Peak Itinerary. Climbers have to drive for 4-5 hours from Kathmandu to Ramecchap during the mid-night to catch the flight early morning to Lukla from Manthali Airport.

Perfect Time to Embark on the Island Peak Climbing

The best climbing season in Nepal is the Spring and Autumn seasons. Spring brings a colorful trekking route covered by the rhododendron flowers and excellent views of the mountains. Moreover, the weather and temperature during the Spring are favorable for the climbers and trekkers. Likewise, in the Autumn Season, just after the Monsoon, the visibility of the mountains is crystal clear. Moreover, the weather is mild during the day and can be chilly during the night. Nevertheless, in the Autumn season, climbing and trekking in Nepal delivers the best Himalayan and cultural experience too. You can even celebrate the major festivals of Nepal while visiting in the Autumn Season. Hence, the best time to climb the Island Peak is either in the Spring or Autumn season.

Permit Required for the Island Peak Climb

Climbers must obtain permit cards to trek and climb in the Everest Region. During the trek, you will hike through the Sagarmatha National Park and the Khumbu Region. Hence, you need to obtain the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Region Municipality Entry Permit, which cost USD 25 each, respectively. Likewise, for the Peak Climb, you should get a Peak Climbing Permit Card issued by the Nepal Mountaineering Association. The Island Peak Climbing Permit costs USD 250 in the spring season and USD 150 in the Autumn Season, respectively. Mountain Eco Trails handles these permits once you book the trip with us. Also, we need your passport copy, passport-size photos, and Visa copy beforehand to issue the permit card.

Moreover, our climbing guide and the porters are insured and taken care of by our team. Our Sherpa Guide not only guides you throughout the journey but also provides moral and motivational support to achieve the feat of reaching the Island Peak.

Emergency and Evacuation during the Island Peak Expedition

Helicopter Charter Evacuation is the only way of rescuing the climbers in case of emergencies. Here, the travel insurance plays an important role in your rescue by Helicopter. In case of an emergency, our Team will observe the situation and take you to a safe place. It is important to know that climbers are taken to the safest place where a Helicopter can reach and an evacuation can be made. Also, sometimes due to bad weather, even the Helicopter arrival can be delayed. So, it is very important to know about emergencies and prepare yourself for them.

Descending to a lower elevation is the best advice in case of altitude sickness. If you push yourself even after getting sick, the situation can get worse. Hence, descending to a lower elevation and drinking enough water is the major medicine.
